Prescribed Burns
Christine Wiedinmyer; NCAR/Environmental Science & Technology
Prescribed burns could help reduce carbon emissions associated with wild fires in the western U.S., according to study by the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). The top map illustrates the estimated annual carbon dioxide emissions related to forest fires from 2001 to 2008 based on satellite imagery and emissions modeling. The bottom map shows how much those emissions could have been reduced through better utilization of prescribed burns.
