The 1921 British Mount Everest Reconnaissance Team. George L. Mallory (1866-1924) is shown, front left, with other members of the first British expedition to Mount Everest. The group explored and mapped routes to the top, setting up two successive, failed attempts to reach the summit. Mallory, along with climbing partner Andrew Irvine, perished in the 1924 attempt high on Everest’s north slopes. In the front row, second from left, is Maj. Edward O. Wheeler, a Canadian-born member of the Survey of India who was a specialist in photo mapping and took pictures of many Himalayan peaks and glaciers.
