A NASA satellite photograph captures a massive phytoplankton bloom in the Barents Sea. The bloom occurred north of the Scandinavian peninsula, a location where multiple ocean current systems merge into the North Cape Current. The milky blue color suggests the presence of coccolithophores, a microscopic plankton plated with white calcium carbonate, which when viewed through ocean water appears bright blue.
