This NASA satellite image, taken in July 2009, captures the swirling ice patterns off the coast of Canada’s Baffin Island. Coastal eddies create the patterns as ice, which clings to the shore during the winter, begins to melt and retreat in the summer. Farther north, long bands of sea ice to the east of the Barnes Ice Cap also show signs of weakening.
