This image, taken by the Landsat satellite in September 2009, captures the precision farming of Noreen Thomas’ farm along the banks of the Buffalo River in northwest Minnesota. Thomas is among a growing number of Midwestern farmers who use satellite images to manage plots on the farm – which includes organic wheat, soybean, corn, and hay – and to minimize damage to the fields. Lush green fields dominate the image, but some crops have already been harvested, leaving squares of tan and brown.
