Steve Zack, a biologist with the New York-based Wildlife Conservation Society, works extensively in Arctic Alaska. In the first of a series of reports for Yale Environment 360, Zack describes how he and his colleagues are using the latest in miniaturized technology to track the remarkable global migrations of birds that nest on Alaska’s North Slope. In subsequent blog posts, Zack will report on how oil and gas development are affecting Arctic wildlife, how global warming is altering the region’s ecosystems, and how scientists are working to identify and protect key wildlife habitats in a large area of Alaska that could soon be opened to oil drilling and mining.
