survey of incidents worldwide, the group Global Witness estimated that 711 environmental activists, journalists or community members have been killed during the last decade over disputes involving land and forest rights. In 2011 alone, the number was 106, which was twice the number of killings in 2009. The authors of the report, released to coincide with the Rio+20 summit, say it provides a stark reminder of a “hidden crisis” in environmental protection and highlights a culture of impunity and a lack of reporting and oversight in many countries. According to their findings, the greatest number of killings occurred in Brazil, Colombia, the Philippines and Peru. “It is a well-known paradox that many of the world's poorest countries are home to the resources that drive the global economy,” the report said. “Now, as the race to secure access to these resources intensifies, it is poor people and activists who increasingly find themselves in the firing line.”
