A NASA satellite image shows a phytoplankton bloom in the Southern Ocean, which surrounds Antarctica. Each summer, as sea ice retreats, rafts of phytoplankton in the Antarctic and the Arctic bloom as the sun catalyzes the photosynthetic process. Those blooms feed zooplankton, which are in turn consumed by seabirds, fish, and marine mammals. But as sea ice rapidly retreats, this web of life is changing. (NASA)
