A team of 60 researchers from five European countries is studying the possible impacts of future ocean acidification at a site off Sweden's west coast. Pictured here in the Gullmar Fjord are two of the study's 10 so-called "mesocosms" — large, clear polyurethane bags in which researchers can mimic the high acidity levels that are expected to be common in the world's oceans by 2100. The oceans are becoming more acidic as steadily rising levels of CO2 in the atmosphere are being absorbed by the planet's seas. (Photo by Ulf Riebesell/GEOMAR)
