Massive Alaska Avalanche

Using imagery from the Landsat 8 satellite, scientists have confirmed that a large landslide occurred in southeastern Alaska on February 16, 2014. The event involved 75 million tons of snow and sediment, and it left a debris flow nearly five miles long. The top image shows the aftermath of the massive avalanche; the bottom image shows the region last summer, before the event. (Image credit: NASA Earth Observatory)
