Richard Popko, a wildlife technician in the Northwest Territories, holds an ivory gull off the north coast of Baffin Island. Populations of ivory gulls in Canada's High Arctic have dropped by 80 percent since the 1980s. Scientists believe that rapidly disappearing Arctic sea ice has created ecological changes that adversely affect the gulls' ability to forage and scavenge.
