The Carnegie Airborne Observatory

Researchers at the Carnegie Institution for Science have developed a pioneering imaging system that uses a suite of airborne sensors to provide detailed, three-dimensional pictures of tropical forests — including the species they contain and the amount of CO2 they store — at astonishing speed. This cross-section view, taken in the Tambopata Forest Reserve, shows the 3-D rainforest structure, with different colors depicting a combination of growth, longevity, and defense compounds in the leaves of the vegetation. Information provided by the CAO could play a vital role in global forestry in the decades ahead, enabling scientists to tell policy makers exactly how much carbon is being stored in forests, and would be emitted if they were cut down.
