Daniel B. Botkin is professor emeritus of the University
of California, Santa Barbara. A pioneer in developing a global approach in ecology, he has done field research worldwide on endangered species, from elephants in Africa to salmon in the Pacific Northwest. He also has developed computer models used worldwide, including forecasting possible effects of global warming on forests and endangered species. He is the author of 15 books, including Discordant Harmonies: A New Ecology for
the 21st Century. His latest book is Powering the Future: A Scientistâ€™s Guide to Energy Independence.
