OneGeology
This image of Earth, part of a new Internet project known as OneGeology, shows geological features color-coded by age, with the mid-Atlantic ridge’s young deposits in pale pink and yellow and progressively older rock in orange, red, and green. It is just one of many images being unveiled this week at the International Geological Conference by OneGeology, a 79-nation project that has produced a digital geological map of the world. OneGeology uses technology similar to Google Earth that provides users different views of the planet, including rock type. The Web portal will give readers access to 170 years of geological information supplied by scientists from 97 organizations.
