She was a staff writer for the Philadelphia Inquirer from 1972 to 2000, is the author of Susquehanna, River of Dreams and has written for numerous publications, including the Los Angeles Times, Washington Post, Fortune, Time, and Rolling Stone. She lives on Chebeague Island, Maine.
